Steven Donald Larson, 52, of Pleasant Prairie, passed away on Friday, February 22, 2013, at his home surrounded by his loving family and friends.
Born in Kenosha on January 31, 1961, he was the son of Donald and Carol (Kress) Larson.
Steven was a 1979 graduate of Tremper, where he was Captain of the Gymnastics Team. He graduated from Gateway in May of 1981 with an Associate Degree in Police Science. He then graduated from Carthage College, where he was on the Dean’s List, in May of 1985 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
On April 13, 2012, he married the love of his life and devoted partner of 23 years, Diana Chromik in their home.
Steven worked for the Kenosha Police Department for over 28 years. He first began his career as a police officer on January 16, 1984. On January 2, 1997, he was promoted to Sergeant. Three years later on January 6, 2000, he was promoted to Lieutenant. He served as the Gang Crimes Supervisor from 1998 until 2001. Most recently, on February 1, 2011, he was promoted to Captain. He received the Silver Star Award from the KPPA for an incident involving an armed subject. He has numerous commendations for his involvement in cases ranging from criminal damage to homicide investigations, and from dealing with suicidal subjects to apprehension of armed robbery and homicide suspects. He also received two lifesaving awards. Letters of appreciation in his file stretch back to Chief Trotta’s command in the early 1980’s. He was also employed by the Kenosha Unified School District in the Finance Department working security for over 20 years.
His hobbies included woodworking, building things around his home and fishing. One of his favorite excursions was his yearly fishing trip with his brothers in northern Wisconsin. He also loved being with Diana and their dogs, Kozmo and Stella.
Steven is survived by his loving wife, Diana; his parents, Donald and Carol Larson of Kenosha; two brothers, William H. (Denise) Larson and Paul T. (Valerie) Larson, both of Kenosha; and a sister, Linda (Randy) Grundy of Johnsburg, IL. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 28th, at Proko Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Sunset Ridge Memorial Park. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 27th, at the funeral home from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Thursday at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the KPSOA or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated by the family.
